the artist SAMMY SLABBINCK
As a child the artist Sammy Slabbinck is so fascinated by magazines from the 60s and 70s that he begins collecting them and basically everything with a certain vintage chic. Later on he decides to cut the collected magazines into pieces, redistributing them and putting them into collages with old photographs. Combining vintage images with contemporary compositional styles Sammy Slabbinck moves very close towards pop art, coming close to surrealism at times. With a very own sence of humor the Belgian artist manages to clothe the viewers face in smiles. The first picture, carrying the title ‘Seafood’ for example, shows an ordinary looking family gatherd around a table eating soup. But instead of soup we see a sea with swimming people in their plates. Sometimes Slabbernick plays with ‘exaggeration and proportions. Other times, the images are placed in a reverse context, juxtaposing modern ideals with traditional states of mind’.
